Reni Eddo-Lodge On The 'Blackfishing' Phenomenon

Image
we have been besieged by a new female body standard. Big breasts, a dimension deceiving waist, a flat stomach, big thighs and incredibly wide hips reign supreme on the internet. Of course, many women have always looked like this, and a lot of those women happen to be black. But in the last five years, this body shape has become fashionable. It's a far cry from the supermodel standard of the 90s and 2000s. Mega brands like Fashion Nova, popularised by Instagram influencer partnerships (this week it was announced as Google's most-searched fashion brand) model their clothes on slim but curvy women. The influencers who advertise their clothes have that body type too. It would be remiss not to mention the Kardashian Jenners, two of whom have been the modern day pioneers of this body standard. ADVERTISEMENT The body takes centre stage in Instagram’s blackfishing scandal. White women, such as instagram influencers Aga Brzostowska or Emma Hallberg, are accused of masquerading a...

So where was she headed? A sexy candlelit dinner with a potential beau, perhaps? A VIP private party with a lavish cornucopia of hors d'oeuvres? Nope. Guess again. The model was on her way to get her American fast food fix at McDonald’s on Oxford Street in Central London with her puffer-donning agent, Ashleah Gonzales. ADVERTISEMENT SPLASH NEWS The glam fast-food grab has a history with celebrities, particularly those in Jenner’s immediate circle. Her sister Kim Kardashian famously dined at a Waffle House with Kanye, Chrissy Teigen, and John Legend while in glitzy evening wear after a night out in Phoenix, Arizona in 2015. And then there’s always Paris Hil...

Helena Christensen Meets The Models Changing Stereotypes In A Rwandan Refugee Camp

Image
Helena Christensen, a longtime supporter of the UNHCR - the UN Refugee Agency, recently visited the Mahama camp in Rwanda to meet refugees who have fled violence and persecution in Burundi. While there, Christensen photographed models who want to break the global media's stereotypes of being a refugee, and took part in a fashion show at the camp. Here, she writes about her visit. by HELENA CHRISTENSEN 2 days ago   This is surreal. But amazingly so. I’m on a catwalk. Concrete floor, corrugated iron roof, music blaring, whooping crowd. I’m wearing a beautifully fitted, heavily patterned dress and a brilliantly clashing headscarf. This could be a show in a warehouse in New York’s Meatpacking district, or in one of London’s old covered markets. But it isn’t. I’m in a community centre. In Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda.
